A Science Week on the Sarandaporos River starts this Friday, June 28, an international initiative to protect and preserve Aoos/Vjosa, the last large free-flowing river in Europe.

Greece's Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Wednesday regarding an Albanian court's decision to reject an appeal by Fredi Beleri, an ethnic Greek elected mayor of Himara and more recently in the European Parliament, who will have to remain in prison until October.

Fredi Beleri, the mayor-elect of the predominantly ethnic Greek city of Himare in southern Albania and elected MEP, is due on Tuesday to hear the verdict of his appeal against a conviction for vote-buying in last year's local polls.

It was seen as no surprise in Greece that the final decision on the appeal of jailed ethnic Greek mayor Fredi Beleri was deferred on Friday to the Special Court of Appeal of Tirana later this month, namely on June 25.

Along with Beleris’ cousin was also an Omonia official from Himara – The two men were released this morning

The Greek minority organization ‘Omonoia’ states: “Rama distributes property titles for the residences of Greeks of Himara – It is on a dangerous downhill path of societal division & dispersion of ethnic hatred”

Pyrrhos Dimas appeared emotional during the presentation of New Democracy’s ballot for the European elections, referring to Freddie Beleris, the elected mayor of Himara who is currently in an Albanian prison

Greeks in the US sent a strong message to Albania & the US Government that they stand by the elected Mayor of Himara as well as all Greeks of Northern Epirus
