Fire aftermath-Authorities on high alert (pics)
Greek authorities are on high alert due to high winds blowing Saturday across the country. In the prefecture of Laconia in the Peloponnese, firefighters have managed to contain most of the fire front but are still operating to extinguish smaller spots around the region. 130 firefighters and 51 vehicles started their operations at the break of dawn.

Huge fire in the Peloponnese, with villages evacuated
A wildfire broke out at 3.50 a.m. on Friday at Neapoli, Lakonia, the picturesque harbor town near the Peloponnese. Monemvasia’s Vice Mayor of Civil Protection called for the villages of Faraklo and Lahi, though he said that no houses had been harmed by the fire.

Greek coast guard picks up 51 irregular migrants off Cape Tenaro
The Greek coast guard rescued 51 irregular migrants early on Tuesday after spotting the sailing boat they were traveling in off Cape Tenaro, at the southernmost tip of the Peloponnese.
The migrants were taken to the nearby harbor at Gytheio.
Two of the group were taken to the hospital for treatment.
Migrant fruit pickers strike, alleging racist treatment
A series of police raids on the shacks of Pakistani fruit-pickers in the area of Skala in Laconia, in the Peloponnese, has prompted a strike by the laborers, who claim to have suffered racist treatment.
