Lucara Diamond

This precious gem, found at the Karowe mine in northeastern Botswana, the largest diamond producer in Africa, is described by Lucara, the company that made the discovery, as “one of the largest rough diamonds ever found.”

A remarkable rough diamond weighing 2,492 carats has been discovered in Botswana, according to an announcement made by the Canadian mining company Lucara Diamond Corp on Thursday.

The gem was unearthed at the Karowe Diamond Mine, located in northeastern Botswana, approximately 430 kilometers (270 miles) from the capital city of Gaborone.

One of the world's largest diamonds has been unearthed in Botswana, the country government said. The CNN reported that the 1,098-carat stone, believed to be the third largest "gem-quality" diamond ever found, was presented to President Mokgweetsi Masisi on Wednesday.

A massive diamond valued at more than $70 million will go under the hammer in London next month, the Sotheby's auction house said May 4.
 
Known as "Lesedi la Rona," it was found nine months ago in Botswana by the Lucara Diamond Corp.
