Traffic police officers are beginning to sanction the owners of electric scooters, as they are not legally allowed to move on the road network in Bulgaria, the head of the Traffic Police-Sofia Commissioner Lyubomir Kostadinov told the BNR.

Electric Scooters Can Now be Rented From 200 Points in Sofia

The first electric scooters in Sofia are already operational today. There are more than 150 scooters in various locations in the city, and anyone who wants to use them can do so for a starting fee of BGN 1.50 and BGN 0.30 per minute. This was explained by the CEO of the company that manages the electric scooters:

The Capital already Has a Parking Lot for Bicycles and Electric Scooters

The first parking lot for scooters and bicycles was opened in the capital, BGNES reports. The bike parking lot is located on Vitosha Blvd., near the intersection with Dr. Stefan Sarafov Street in the South Park direction.

In addition, similar parking lots will also be opened around the Largo, at Moskovska Street and Dondukov Blvd.

Sofia Municipality: Electric Scooters Will only Be Able to Be Rented if Registered and with a Speed Limit

Electric scooters will only be able to be rented if registered and with a speed limit. Experts from the State Agency for Road Traffic Safety held the first of a series of meetings announced with local authorities about the forthcoming amendments to the Road Traffic Act to regulate the use of such vehicles.

The State Is Considering Regulation for Electric Scooters

The State Agency for Road Safety proposes the introduction of regulation for electric scooters in the Road Traffic Act and the Road Vehicles Act, the Agency said.

This type of vehicle is increasingly spreading throughout the European Union, and Bulgaria is no exception. Several incidents with them show a strong need to develop mandatory minimum rules for their safe road traffic.

Scooter anarchy on city streets

The electric scooters that have appeared in the country since the beginning of the year seem to have taken streets in central Athens and Thessaloniki by storm.
However, despite the initial enthusiasm, concerns are now growing due to the fact that there are no official traffic rules or legislation governing the scooters' circulation on the streets.
