U.S. forces shot down a medium-range ballistic missile off the coast of Hawaii Wednesday as part of a test conducted amid heightened regional tensions.
Early Wednesday local time, U.S. Navy sailors on the USS John Paul Jones “successfully conducted a complex defense flight test,” according to a statement by the Missile Defense Agency, a section of the Defense Department.

The United States called on Wednesday for "concerted action" by the international community to pressure North Korea into abandoning its banned nuclear and missile programs by fully enforcing economic sanctions, reported Reuters. 

The United Nations condemned North Korea's "outrageous" firing of a ballistic missile over Japan on Aug. 29, demanding Pyongyang halt its weapons program but holding back on any threat of new sanctions on the isolated regime.

North Korea says its firing of a missile over Japan was "the first step" of military operations in the Pacific, signalling plans for more launches, according to BBC. 

State media also repeated threats to the US Pacific island of Guam, which it called "an advanced base of invasion".

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has called on Aug. 30 for more ballistic missile tests targeting "the Pacific," according to Pyongyang's state-run.        
         
He personally oversaw the launch of a projectile over Japan early Tuesday morning Korean time, prompting Tokyo to condemn the test as an "unprecedented threat."

North Korea has launched three short range ballistic missiles. Apparently, two of them had an unsuccessful flight, and a third exploded almost immediately after the launch. This was stated by the US Army, and they were not a threat to North America or Guam, Reuters reported.
