Fading food, lost language

"Liparidas!"… Remembering the word, her face instantly lights up with joy. She travels back to her childhood in Ortaköy, a neighborhood once densely populated by Jews in Istanbul. One could apparently see that she feels the taste, too. This is one of the highlights of the delightful documentary by Deniz Alphan shown at the special screening section of the 36th Istanbul Film Festival this year.

The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality has unfortunately adopted a stance that will damage its respectability. The highly controversial "Seagull" transport hub project on the coast of the Bosphorus in the Kabataş neighborhood is not only designed by an inept architect - it also blocks views of the historic Molla Çelebi Mosque built by the great Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan. 

ISIL militant linked to Istanbul nightclub attacker says he was previously detained, released

An Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) militant linked to the attacker of Istanbul's Reina nightclub said he was previously detained and later released by police in Turkey. 

Ilyas Mamasharipov, who ordered the attack, was among those arrested on Jan. 31 for aiding and abetting Reina attacker Abdulkadir Masharipov.

Two foreign nationals linked to the deadly attack on an Istanbul nightclub on New Year's Eve were arrested by 
an Istanbul court on Jan.13, state-run Anadolu Agency has reported. 

Two suspects Omar Asim and Abuliezi Abuduhamiti, who are Chinesecitizens, are accused of "being member of an armed terror organization," and"helping 39 times first-degree-murder".
