Many in the Balkans region have long mistrusted artificial cooling methods. In some areas, away from the tourist hot spots, people even avoid chilled drinks and ice cream for fear of catching a cold.

Many travelers from the United States in Greece and other countries this week lost a crucial tool to check maps, make reservations, use ride-hailing apps and more because of a cellular data outage that began affecting users of AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon on Wednesday.

The Athens Prosecutor's Office launched an ex officio investigation on Thursday into a server outage at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens on Monday, which prevented students from completing online examinations.

"All customers are back in service, we will focus on investigating the cause of the equipment failures and on getting the electrical-delivery system back to its normal level of reliability.", the energy company Con Edison company shared on Twitter.

The western Aegean island of Skopelos suffered a power outage lasting five hours early on Tuesday morning after lightning caused disruptions to the power grid.

The island's mayor, Christos Vasiloudis, told Kathimerini that the power went out at around 4 a.m. and was restored five hours later.

The Greek holiday island of Hydra, a one-hour ferry ride from the capital's port of Piraeus, has been without power since the early hours of Saturday and on Sunday started experiencing water shortages as many of its pumps rely on electricity.

The problem started with a power outage at 5.30 a.m. on Saturday, according to the island's mayor.

The Aegean islands of Paros, Naxos, Ios, Sikinos and Folegandros were left without electricity on Wednesday after a short circuit resulted in damage to the wider region's central power station on Paros.

According to the Public Power Corporation (PPC), the outage occurred at 10.50 a.m. while it said power was expected to be restored later on Wednesday.
