Thessaloniki Metro train stoppage disrupts services

The brand new Thessaloniki metro keeps having teething problems.

In the latest incident, a train stopped between stations Saturday evening. The passengers, after being kept inside for 15 minutes, had to walk to the next station. 

Since then, traffic between Nea Elvetia and Panepistimio stations, that is 8 of the system's 13 stops, has been running on one track only.

Two central Athens metro stations to close on Wednesday

The Panepistimio and Monastiraki metro stations will be closed for several hours on Wednesday on the orders of the police.

The decision is part of security measures in the Greek capital, where rallies and marches have been planned to mark the 15-year anniversary of the fatal shooting of teenager Alexis Grigoropoulos by a police officer in 2008.

Athens metro station closed ahead of university reform bill protest

The Panepistimio metro station in central Athens closed at 11 a.m. on Thursday by order of the police, due to a rally planned to protest against legislation reforming tertiary education.

The rally will start at 1 p.m. at the University of Athens central building.

Trains will continue to pass through the station without stopping. 

Two Athens metro stations to close for Grigoropoulos rally

Police in Athens on Tuesday ordered the closure of two central metro stations amid concerns of violence at a rally marking the eighth anniversary since the police killing of teenager Alexis Grigoropoulos.

The Panepistimio metro station at Athens University will close at 3 p.m. and Syntagma at 4 p.m., and will not serve commuters until police give the all-clear.
