A Cyprus Orthodox Church official says a rare, 1.500 year-old mosaic depicting Saint Mark has joined other repatriated pieces that were looted from the ethnically split island nation's breakaway north.

Together the pieces will create a reproduction of an apse that adorned a 6th century church in island's north.

The communications minister of Cyprus says a rare 6th-century portrait mosaic of St. Mark which was looted from an Orthodox Christian church more than four decades ago has returned intact to the Mediterranean island nation.

An archeological team has unearthed a 12-room villa with mosaic-covered floors and walls decorated with colorful frescoes and vegetative geometric figures in the ancient city of Tripolis located in Turkey's Aegean region. The villa is estimated to be nearly 2,000 years old, according to the head of the excavation team.

A 1800-year-old mosaic depicting a man with a toga was discovered by archaeologists in Caesarea in Israel, Reuters reported. The discovery was found during excavations of a Byzantine building, which was built around 300 years after the mosaic itself.
