The Albanian inmate who murdered a prison guard at Malandrino Prison in central Greece earlier this week has been found dead in his cell.

Ilia Kareli had been moved to Nigrita jail in Serres, northern Greece, and was placed in solitary confinement. His cell was monitored via CCTV.

Authorities are investigating whether the murder of a prison guard by an inmate at Malandrino Prison, central Greece, on Tuesday is part of an alleged effort to increase tension at the country’s jails, where the situation is “explosive,” according to a Justice Ministry official who spoke to Kathimerini.

A Thessaloniki court has tacked on a few more years in prison for a group of 19 prisoners already serving time at the Diavata prison in northern Greece, for trying to prevent law enforcement agents from transferring a fellow inmate, a Russian national, to Athens where he was set to be extradited to Russia, in February 2010.

Ex-security boss Munir Alibabic told the trial for war crimes at detention centres in Hadzici near Sarajevo that his superior warned him not to investigate the jails any further.

A new project aims to create a comprehensive database of all the prison camps and other wartime detention facilities across the country over the next five years.

Inmates held in Greece's only prison hospital are refusing food and medication as part of a protest campaign against what they see as dire conditions in the institution.
