Prison population declines by over 8 pct in Turkey
The population of prisons in Turkey has decreased by 8.5 percent to some 266,831 as of Dec. 31, 2020, compared to the same day of 2019, figures from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) show.
"A total of 96 percent of the inmates are males, leaving with just 4 percent female prisoners," TÜİK said in a statement on Nov. 2.

Project to recover memory of political detainees who participated in restoration works of Constanta Casino
The Institute for the Investigation of Communist Crimes and Memory of the Romanian Exile (IICCMER) announced on Tuesday that it will start a large project to recover the memory of former political prisoners who participated in the rehabilitation of the Constanta Casino in the early 1950s.
Convict runs away while on prison leave
Police in northern Greece on Wednesday were seeking a 51-year-old foreign inmate of the Nigrita Prison who failed to return to the penitentiary on Tuesday, when his furlough expired.
The inmate, who had received a six-day prison leave, is serving a sentence for forming a criminal gang and violating immigration law.

One of two escaped convicts nabbed in downtown Athens
One of two inmates who escaped from a prison in Avlona, north of the Greek capital, on Monday night has been arrested in downtown Athens.
Police tracked the unnamed convict to Omonia Square and are still looking for the second.

A Greek prison in Trikala, northwestern Thessaly, has been locked down after the discovery of a tunnel that could be used in an escape plot. The tunnel was found by prison guards who searched the cell of an inmate. A full investigation is now underway.
