Bulgaria Ranks Last in EU for Lifelong Learning Participation

Eurostat's latest figures reveal that Bulgaria ranks last in the EU for lifelong learning, with only 1.4% of Bulgarians participating in educational activities last year. This figure is nearly ten times lower than the EU average, indicating a significant lack of interest among Bulgarians aged 25 to 64 in continuing education.

Guardians of stagnation

If one is to believe trade unionists, the PISA exams, which are held in all OECD countries, lead to the "privatization/commodification of the educational rights of the majority of students," according to the secondary school teachers' union OLME. That is why "resistance of the free pedagogical thought from the economic logic of 'measurable indicators' was needed," it added.

Performance of Greek students in steady decline

The quality of education in Greece is steadily declining. At least that's what the Greek students' performance in the most recent OECD-organized PISA (Program for International Student Assessment) competition in 2022 indicates. In the last 10 years, Greek pupils have performed worst in text comprehension, math and science, the three areas in which the competition evaluates proficiency.
