Anti-abortion posters were taken down from metro stations in Athens Monday after an intervention by the Transport Ministry which deemed them an affront to women's rights.

The fire service ordered the closure of the Liosia-Kiato section of the Athens suburban railway (Proastiakos) on Friday due to thick smoke caused by a fire which started in dry grassland in the area of Nea Zoi, at Aspropyrgos.

The Intercity rail service is set to return to Greek tracks in the coming weeks, as railway operator Trainose is, according to sources, planning to resume the four-hour connection between Athens and Thessaloniki in a bid to raise its corporate profile and increase passenger numbers.

A passenger train serving the Thessaloniki-Larisa route derailed as it arrived at Platy station in Imathia, Central Macedonia, early Thursday morning.

The accident caused damages to the railway carriages of train 1591 but there were no injuries, operator TRAINOSE said in a statement.

The company said it is investigating the circumstances of the incident.

An engine failure on a train serving the Athens suburban railway (Proastiakos) route on Monday was expected to result in cancellations and delays.

The problem occurred at around 9 a.m. on a train en route to Athens International Airport from Piraeus, leading to the train being stopped at Koropi. 

Trainose said that engineers were working on restoring services. 

Turkey's first driverless metro line in Istanbul was ranked as Europe's biggest automated line, the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality said on Nov. 14 citing a Brussel-based transport association.

Direct service to and from Athens International Airport resumed on the Greek capital's metro system over the weekend, following complaints over a decision by operator STASY to split the trip between different trains.
