Refuse-derived fuel

Bulgaria's capital, Sofia, stands on the edge of a potential waste crisis within the next three years if immediate actions are not taken, as highlighted by an inspection conducted by the new management of the Waste Treatment Distribution Company.

The government gave consent for the managing authority of operational programme Environment 2014-2020 to sign a contract with Sofia Municipality in partnership with Toplofikatsia Sofia for the construction of a cogeneration plant that will use refuse derived fuel (RDF), the government press office said, reports Focus News Agency. 

A newly-built waste processing plant in Bulgaria's capital Sofia will begin operating on Monday, the city mayor has announced.

The construction of Sofia's new integrated municipal waste management system has been completed and all of the equipment has been installed.

The waste treatment facility was built with EU funding provided under operational program Environment 2007-2013, according to a media statement of the Sofia Municipality.
