Right to a fair trial

With regard to the continued imprisonment of the ethnic Greek mayor of Himare, Fredi Beleri, Greek diplomatic sources have stressed that, as a candidate for EU membership, Albania must strictly respect his right to a fair trial and the presumption of innocence.

The government has withdrawn an application to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) requesting a review of the decision vindicating former president of the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) Andreas Georgiou that his right to a fair trial had been violated in Greece.

The Strasbourg-based European Court of Human Rights on Tuesday dismissed claims by former judge Altina Xhoxhaj that her rights to a fair trial and to respect for private and family life were violated in 2018 when she was fired from the Albanian Constitutional Court after an investigation showed she owned properties whose cost could not be justified by her income.

The controversy arose over the comments made by the president of the Commission Investigating Murders of Journalists, Veran Matic, on the trial for the murder of journalist Slavko Curuvija, Beta agency reported.

The Constitutional Court has released statistics regarding individual applications, indicating that a majority of the decisions it has handed down regarding violations of constitutional rights relate to the right to a fair trial. 

The Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) has welcomed the acquittal of its members in several cases, proving the "righteousness" in its "faith in the fair completion" of the trials, according to a statement.

BELGRADE - Head of the Serbian government Office for Kosovo-Metohija (KiM) Marko Djuric said Wednesday that he expects extention of the 30-day deadline set for the presentation of defense of Oliver Ivanovic and other defendants, and reiterated that Serbia requests that the defendants be granted pre-trial release and ensured a fair trial.
