High fire risk on Saturday

A number of regions in the country have been designated as having a very high risk of fire (Category 4) on Saturday, according to the Fire Risk Prediction Map issued by the General Secretariat of Civil Protection at the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection.

Very high risk of fire for Crete and seven islands

Crete, as well as parts of the northern and southern Aegean, faces a very high risk of fire on Saturday, the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection has said.

On the ministry's fire risk forecast map for Saturday, Chios, Crete, Ikaria, Kalymnos, Karapathos, Kos, Rhodes and Samos are all marked orange, the second-highest fire-risk category.

High risk of fire in five regions on Saturday

With temperatures peaking in the low 40s Celsius on Friday, authorities have issued a fire hazard warning for Saturday.

According to the fire hazard prediction map published by the Civil Protection Agency, five regions are considered to be at very high risk of wildfires, ranking at Level 4 (orange) out of a maximum of 5.

More than 120 migrants rescued in east Aegean on Monday morning

Greek coast guard officers located and rescued 121 migrants and refugees in two separate incidents in the eastern Aegean Sea on Monday morning.

The fist incident concerned an inflatable dinghy that had sailed from Turkey and was trying to reach the northern shores of Ikaria. It was carrying 49 unidentified migrants who have been transported to Vathy on the nearby island of Samos.

Island migrant camps bursting at the seams

The number of migrants and refugees residing at reception centers and camps on the Greek islands has surpassed 20,000 this week for the first time, according to the latest official data.

On Wednesday, the number of people crammed into overcrowded shelters came to 20,050.

The problem is especially acute on Lesvos and Samos in the eastern Aegean.
