A tragic incident occurred when a 29-year-old woman from Sandanski gave birth in an ambulance while being transported to a hospital in Petrich. Despite the presence of a medical team in the vehicle, the baby tragically did not survive. Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the newborn's death.

The summer of 2024, encompassing June, July, and August, has been recorded as the hottest and one of the driest in Bulgaria since the start of the century. According to the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH), the highest temperature measured was 42.2 degrees Celsius in Sandanski on July 16.

The current heatwave in Bulgaria shows no signs of abating for at least the next ten days, with warm nights also expected. Climatologist Prof. Georgi Rachev, speaking on Radio Stara Zagora, attributed the prolonged heat to a hot front originating from North Africa.

A yellow warning code for high temperatures has been issued across Bulgaria for today and tomorrow, July 10 and 11. Maximum temperatures are expected to reach 39 degrees Celsius, with Sofia forecasted to hit 34 degrees. Shumen and Ruse will experience 39 degrees, Plovdiv and Silistra 38, and Yambol, Kardjali, Vidin, and Sandanski 37 degrees.

From Friday, the warming trend in Bulgaria will continue, and by June 10, temperatures will rise even further. Climatologist Prof. Georgi Rachev mentioned that after Sunday, air conditioners will be needed for cooling.
