South Sudan suffering 'man-made' famine
South Sudan on Feb. 20 declared famine in some parts of the country, with more than three years of war leaving nearly five million hungry in what aid groups called a "man-made" tragedy.
Isaiah Chol Aruai, chairman of South Sudan's National Bureau of Statistics, said some parts of the northern Greater Unity region "are classified in famine, or... risk of famine."

South Sudan is not Africa
This is not an article on South Sudan, which is just as well because the conflicts there are almost fractal in their complexity. The mini-war last weekend between the forces of President Salva Kiir and Vice-President Riek Machar, which killed more than 270 people and saw tanks, artillery and helicopter gunships used in the capital, Juba, is part of a pattern that embraces the whole country.

US circulates draft resolution for UN sanctions on South Sudan
The United States on Aug. 19 circulated a draft UN Security Council resolution proposing an arms embargo and targeted sanctions against South Sudan if President Salva Kiir refuses to sign a peace accord ending the country's civil war.
'Girls raped, boys abducted, towns torched' as South Sudan battle rages
Gunmen in South Sudan have raped girls, seized boys to become soldiers and torched towns in some of the heaviest fighting seen in the 17-month-long civil war, the United Nations said May 12.

Sudan rebels free Bulgarian aid workers: Ministry
Six Bulgarian U.N. aid workers who were detained by rebels in Sudan's strife-torn South Kordofan region have been released, the Bulgarian foreign ministry said on Jan. 31.
"They are in good health and are in a safe place with a team of the United Nations (World) Food Program," foreign ministry spokeswoman Betina Zhoteva said.

Six Bulgarians Held Captive in Sudan since Jan 26 Released
The six Bulgarian aid workers, who were held captive in Sudan since January 26, have been released.
The six Bulgarian citizens were detained by Sudanese rebels after their helicopter made an emergency landing.
Bulgarian Helicopter Crew Remains Captured in Sudan
The six Bulgarians working for the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), who were captured by Sudanese insurgents on Monday, have still not been released.
Their release was expected on Thursday or Friday at the latest, but at present they still remain captured, private NOVA TV station reports.
