Judges insist Nigrita guards must be tried over inmates' death
Thirteen correctional officers are to stand trial over the death of Albanian inmate Ilie Kareli in Nigrita Prison last March after a judicial council in Serres, northern Greece, rejected their appeal against their indictment.
The indictment was issued last October after a judicial investigation found that the inmate had been tortured.
Coroner's report into Serres woman's death points to murder
A coroner?s report concerning the death of a 70-year-old woman whose body was found on Thursday in her home in the municipality of Alistrati in Nea Zichni near the northern city of Serres has suggested that the victim was probably murdered.
The 70-year-old, who was not named, appears to have died of suffocation, according to the coroner?s report.

Seven people in Serres in northern Greece were sentenced to between three and six years in prison on Friday, after being found guilty of embezzling European farming subsidies.
Another 34 people were acquitted in the same case, which concerns more than 900,000 euros in subsidies granted for tomato cultivation on the basis of falsified certificates.

An investigation has been launched after a 4-month-old baby died on board a tourist coach in northern Greece early on Friday.
The coach was traveling from Romania to Thessaloniki when the childs parents, a Romanian couple, asked the driver to call an ambulance after their child started to run a high temperature.

Serres farmer crushed to death by earth-moving machine
A 64-year-old farmer was killed on Thursday after an earth-moving machine fell on top of him at his farm in the village of Triantafyllia, in the northern regional unit of Serres.
According to sources, the accident occurred while the man had been trying to repair the machine.
