Erdoğan approves bill introducing tougher sentences for sex abuse of children

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan approved a bill on Dec. 2 that will gradually increase sentences for the sexual abuse of children nine days before a Constitutional Court annulment over the content of the crime goes into effect. 

According to the new law, there will be a distinction made between victims aged under 12 and those aged between 12 and 18.

Only a fraction of rape victims take legal action, report shows

Around 5,000 rapes are reported in Greece every year but only around 150 of the victims take legal action, according to the Hellenic Society of Forensic Medicine.

A recent report indicates that 24 percent of women have reported physical abuse (18 percent by their partner) while 6 percent of women claim to have suffered sexual abuse (5 percent by their partner).
