Turkish journalist Ahmet Şık kept in isolation, says lawyer
Prominent journalist Ahmet Şık has been kept in isolation in prison, according to his lawyer who recently visited him.
Şık, who was arrested on Dec. 30, 2016, over several tweets and his articles for daily Cumhuriyet, was denied drinking water for three days and has not had access to the news, daily Cumhuriyet reported Jan. 6.
Convict sets self afire in Istanbul prison
A convict who was serving his sentence at the Silivri prison in Istanbul set himself afire on Nov. 29, Doğan News Agency has reported.
A number of firefighters and police units were immediately dispatched to the prison in the afternoon hours upon a fire warning.

Religious beliefs and practices used to be private
The year was 1969; the incident I am going to tell happened that year during the beginning of an election campaign. Republican People's Party (CHP) deputy Ali İhsan Göğüş paid a visit to party chair İsmet İnönü at his home and presented the candidate list to him that was to be handed over to the election council. Two journalists were accompanying him.

Turkey says it is proposing migrant return deals to 14 countries
Turkey has said it had proposed signing agreements with 14 countries on the return of migrants from EU member states.
Ankara had "offered to conclude readmission deals with 14 countries", foreign ministry spokesman Tanju Bilgiç said at a weekly news conference without naming the countries.
Turkish PM calls Cumhuriyet report 'espionage against Turkey'
Prime Minister Ahmet Davuto?lu has called the daily Cumhuriyet report on intelligence trucks bound for Syria "espionage against the state."
"There is an issue of espionage in the [Cumhuriyet's] National Intelligence Agency (M?T) reports. Literally, the subject is about aid materials sent to Bay?rbucak Türkmens, not about the two journalists expressing their opinion," Davuto?lu said.

Major 7.9 magnitude quake strikes southwest of Indonesia: USGS
A powerful and shallow earthquake of magnitude 7.9 struck off the west coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra on March 2, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
The epicentre was 808 km (502 miles) southwest of Padang, USGS said. It was 10 km (six miles) deep.
