Aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman has arrived at the US naval base in Souda Bay, Crete.

The nuclear-power Nimitz-class carrier, which has been at the center of the US Navy's strikes against the Islamic State, will remain docked in Souda until May 28.

Greece's military base in Souda Bay, Crete, is an "essential hub" for NATO operations in the Mediterranean, combining world-class facilities with access to North Africa, the Commander of Allied Joint Force Command Naples and US Naval Forces Europe and Africa, US Navy Admiral James Foggo, told Kathimerini in an exclusive interview.

Greece came into being, survived and developed as a state because it was able to combine the so-called Greek spirit with the support of key powers every time it stood at a critical crossroads. It can do so again, as long as it plays its cards right.

US Ambassador Geoffrey Pyatt has once again highlighted the strategic importance that the base at Souda Bay in Crete has for Washington, describing it as a model of bilateral military cooperation. 

Speaking at a reception Friday evening marking 242 years since the founding of the American navy, Pyatt said Greece and the US are two allies that are pursuing similar goals.
