Red Sea update: All 18 fires extinguished on tanker ‘Sounion’ – Vessel towed to Suez

 The Greek-flagged tanker ‘Sounion’ has successfully extinguished all 18 fires that had been burning on board. The firefighting effort was completed on Sunday, October 6.

According to sources from the Ministry of Shipping, a specialized rescue team of 27 members, supported by the Aegean Pelagos lifeboat, carried out the operation.

New lighting system befitting of Poseidon

The official ceremony of the modern illumination of the ancient Temple of Poseidon on Cape Sounio took place on Monday evening to the imposing melodies of Greek composer Stavros Xarchakos.

The ceremony was inaugurated by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, in the presence of Culture Minister Lina Mendoni and guests from Greece and abroad.

The lighting was designed by internationally renowned Eleftheria Deko, known for her award-winning work on the Acropolis and the opening ceremony of the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. Red Sea: Greek-owned tanker sounion successfully towed to safety

Under the protection of EUNAVFOR ASPIDES, the Greek-owned tanker Sounion was successfully towed to a safe area without any reported oil spill.

The completion of this phase of the operation is the result of a comprehensive approach and close collaboration among all involved parties committed to preventing an environmental disaster that could affect the entire region.

Two killed in Anavyssos crash

Two people were killed in a crash Friday night in Anavyssos, East Attica.

The accident occurred around 9 p.m. on Athens-Sounion Avenue when a car driven by a 31-year-old woman collided with a motorcycle. The 28-year-old motorcyclist and his 30-year-old passenger died at the scene. 

Operation “Shields”: Tugging of the Sounion tanker currently not possible

The European Operation “Shields,” which provided assistance in the effort to tow the Greek-owned oil tanker and prevent an ecological disaster from the crude oil spill, has reported that towing the Greek-owned tanker MV Sounion, located 72 nautical miles west of Hodeidah, Yemen, in the Red Sea, is not currently possible by the private companies involved in the rescue operation after the vessel

Operation to tow Greek tanker on fire in Red Sea underway

A major operation is underway to tow the Greek-owned tanker Sounion, which is on fire in the Red Sea. The vessel, carrying 150,000 tons of crude oil, was struck by Yemeni Houthi rebels on August 21.

To avoid an environmental disaster, warships from the European Aspides mission are escorting the two tugboats and the tanker.
