Slovenian spa resorts harbour much optimism ahead of the May Day holidays, saying that bookings so far are promising and that more are expected just before the holidays. Most of the guests will be from Slovenia, but the number of foreign visitors has been increasing this year.

Long-drawn-out court cases to determine who owns the assets of Serbia's 50 or so spas - many of which are run down - are slowing down their announced sale.

Serbia's Ministry of Economy told BIRN that litigation is ongoing between the state fund for pension and disability insurance, PIO, and the spas and the state over the PIO's percentage of ownership of the assets of the spas.

Bulgaria and Romania will start offering joint spa holiday packages to tourists from the beginning of next year.

The package, which is part of the EU-funded project "Roman Thermal Spas of Europe", will offer to tourists the opportunity to stay at two spa resorts - one in Bulgaria and one in Romania.

BELGRADE - Representatives of the national associations of spas in Serbia, Slovenia, Croatia and Turkey inked an agreement on establishment of the Balkan Spa Institute on Friday.

The associations have been cooperating for ten years, and now they hope that other countries in the region will join them as well.
