Archbishop Elpidophoros of America has dismissed reports suggesting a lukewarm reception during his recent visit to the Mount Athos monastic community on Greece's Halkidiki peninsula.

Poll gives New Democracy 21.5-point lead over SYRIZA
Conservative New Democracy enjoys a 21.5 percentage point over its main rival, leftist SYRIZA, according to a new opinion poll.
Conducted by Marc for ANT1, the poll put New Democracy on 39.5% and SYRIZA on 18%.
Cretan beaches swarming with illegal structures
An attempt is under way on Crete to get the bulldozers back to work as the two-year suspension of demolitions on the island has led to an increase in illegal structures erected on its beaches.
Indicatively, 154 demolition protocols are pending in Iraklio, 130 in Lasithi, 80 in Hania and six in Rethymno.

Two people arrested in Mykonos, Paros for illegal loungers, umbrellas
Police on Sunday arrested two people on the islands of Mykonos and Paros for illegally installing loungers and umbrellas on the beach.
Officers handcuffed a 42-year-old man in Mykonos who had placed 77 sets of umbrella seats and five wooden gazebos in front of a well-known hotel on the popular beach of Kalafatis.
Construction boom on isles of Cyclades
There has been an unprecedented explosion in construction on the Cyclades in the Aegean over the last five years, according to data from the National Statistical Service on new constructions from 2018 to 2022 on the region's 23 inhabited islands.

Storms cause power cuts, flooding in northern Greece
Storms that hit areas in western Thessaloniki as well as the city center on Saturday caused power cuts and flooding of houses, Central Macedonia Region director of civil protection Charalambos Stergiadis told state-run news agency AMNA.

Compliance by Nammos, maneuvers for Principote on Mykonos
The case of the Nammos beach restaurant on the island of Mykonos is heading toward closure after the Syros Town Planning Authority certified the company's compliance with the Environment Ministry's request that the illegal structures it had erected be demolished.
This has paved the way for the reopening of the sealed-off site.
Fugitive horses cause chaos on Thessaloniki highway
Two horses caused traffic disruptions on Thursday after they began galloping on the highway connecting Moudania and Thessaloniki in northern Greece near the Thermi bridge.
The Thessaloniki Traffic Police responded immediately and arrived on the scene to regulate traffic while also ensuring the safety of drivers and that the horses were collected by their owner.
