Infrastructures, human resources and expanding the tourist season are the necessary preconditions for a sustainable development of tourism and of air transport in Greece, Dimitris Gerogiannis, CEO of Aegean Airlines, said on Monday.

He said infrastructures were extremely important for the sustainable development of tourism, of cities and of the country in general.

Greek citizens, who in their overwhelming majority recognize the importance of tourism for the national economy, are becoming skeptical in relation to its effects on their daily lives, on the environment and on the character of individual destinations, while they are troubled by the spread of short-term rentals as well as increases in the cost of vacations, according to the findings of surveys

Greek tourism has all the requirements to develop into a sustainable source of national wealth that will stand out among the international competition. The country's natural and cultural capital has unparalleled potential.

Market conditions at this stage do not favor a de-escalation in food prices anytime soon, warned the president of the Association of Greek Food Industries (SEVT), Ioannis Jotis, on Monday.

Doug Lansky, a specialist in sustainable tourism, spoke on the global state of the sector as part of the "Reimagine Tourism in Greece" summit held by Kathimerini. Among the topics he covered were air travel, single-use plastics, eco-tourism and water management.

Kathimerini is launching its "Reimagine Tourism in Greece" initiative with the inaugural event that will take place this Wednesday from 11.30 a.m. to 7 p.m., at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center.

Nikos Androulakis, leader of the Socialist PASOK-Movement of Change, said the party's program focuses on sustainable development and the green transition as the only way to limit the consequences of climate change. 

Sustainable hospitality in short-term rental accommodation is expected to evolve into a thriving niche market.
