Cyprus could see up to 50,000 cars recalled due to defective airbags that have been seen as responsible for numerous deaths and injuries around the world, including in Cyprus.

Ford Motor is recalling certain 2004 to 2006 Ranger vehicles because replacement front passenger air bag inflators may have been installed incorrectly.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a letter that the recall includes 231,942 vehicles.

The vehicles had received replacement front passenger air bag inflators under a previous recall.

German carmaker Volkswagen has said it will recall 410,000 cars from its own brand and Spanish subsidiary Seat over faulty seat belts, warning customers not to use the middle seat in the meantime.

German car manufacturer BMW on May 9 said it was expanding a British recall on faulty vehicles whose engines are at risk of suddenly cutting out.

General Motors will recall more than 2.5 million vehicles in China over concerns about airbags made by troubled Japanese giant Takata, Chinese authorities have said, dealing a blow to the U.S. automaker in the world's largest car market.

Troubled Japanese car parts maker Takata has filed for bankruptcy protection in the United States and Japan. It faces lawsuits and tens of billions of dollars in costs over an airbag defect linked to at least 17 deaths globally.

Japanese auto parts maker Takata Corp expressed condolences on June 27 to victims of its faulty air bags linked to at least 16 deaths and 180 injuries around the world, but stopped short of offering a full apology. 

Japan's crisis-hit car parts maker Takata filed for bankruptcy protection on June 26 and said its chief executive would quit after a deadly airbag crisis that triggered the auto industry's biggest ever safety recall.

Toyota and Nissan, Japan's two top automakers, on June 25 said they will recall more than three million more cars globally because of concerns over airbags involved in eight deaths worldwide.

Japanese automaker Honda on June 22 confirmed a new death linked to an exploding air bag crisis, bringing the global total to eight fatalities -- that has sparked the recall of millions of vehicles.

The company said a woman in Los Angeles died in September last year after the faulty inflator in a 2001 Honda Civic ruptured, firing metal shrapnel at her.
