A U.S.-backed proposal for a ceasefire and hostage deal between Israel and Hamas appears to be in limbo, with neither side yet publicly committing to the current plan for a Gaza deal amid demands for changes.

Top U.S. diplomat Antony Blinken said Wednesday that a truce and hostage release deal to end the Gaza war was still possible, wrapping up a Middle East tour as deadly strikes rocked the Palestinian territory.

Lebanon's Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah, a Hamas ally, rained rockets on northern Israel, a day after an Israeli strike killed one of its senior commanders.

Hamas gave its official response to the latest truce proposal for Gaza on Tuesday, calling for a "complete halt" to Israeli "aggression" as fighting raged in the Palestinian territory.

"The response prioritises the interests of our Palestinian people and emphasises the necessity of a complete halt to the ongoing aggression on Gaza," Hamas said in a joint statement with Islamic Jihad.

Hamas accepts a U.N. Security Council ceasefire resolution, and the group is ready to negotiate over the details, a senior Hamas official said on Tuesday in a first major green light to a recently announced proposal.

The UN Security Council has adopted a resolution calling for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. With 14 votes in favor and 1 against, the American proposal for a truce between Israel and Hamas was approved. The resolution supports Joe Biden's peace proposal, which Washington claims has already been accepted by the Israeli side.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken will hold talks with key Israeli opposition figures on Tuesday, a day after he arrived in the country to push a ceasefire plan for the war in Gaza.

His visit is part of a drive by the United States to secure a ceasefire in the eight-month war between Israel and Palestinian militant group Hamas.

Türkiye welcomes the United Nations Security Council's adoption of a resolution aimed at reaching a comprehensive cease-fire deal to end the war in Gaza, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.

"We consider the United Nations Security Council Resolution to establish a ceasefire as an important step towards ending the massacres in Gaza," the statement read.
