School bus safety lapses

Targeted inspections of 1,621 school buses by traffic police Wednesday revealed a wide array of safety violations, including two cases of drivers not having the required driving license, three without a certificate of professional competence, and one vehicle with worn tires.

The season of the tractor

It was early on the morning of February 7, 1997, when a force of riot police and soldiers started deflating the tires of the tractors of protesting farmers on the national highway at Mikrothives in Central Greece. Most of the farmers in the days-long blockade had gone home to bed, leaving a small group to man the protest line. They were arrested.

Fair remuneration

We cannot demand that public organizations and agencies are run by experienced and capable managers while at the same time insisting that their salaries remain lower than what they would get in a similar post in the private sector. 

112 alert issued following blaze at Aspropyrgos recycling unit

The civil protection authorities have issued a 112 alert to residents in Aspropyrgos, west of Athens, asking them to stay in their homes and to close their doors and windows after a fire broke out in a recycling unit.

The fire, which broke out at 2:10 p.m. in the exterior of the property, is being fueled by burning tires, vehicles and recyclable materials.

700-year-old chapel in Istanbul’s historical peninsula used as tire storage

A historical chapel, believed to be 700 years old, has been found in the backyard of a tire shop in Istanbul's Fatih district.

The chapel, a significant part of which is still intact but deplorable due to neglect, is used by a shopkeeper to preserve hundreds of old tires.
