Turkish invasion of Cyprus

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis reiterated that Greece will not recognize Turkish-occupied northern Cyprus or compromise on its sovereignty, a few days after meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in New York. 

The two leaders met Tuesday on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, their second meeting in two months after a July meeting in Washington.

Cyprus' president said on Wednesday he was ready to immediately resume reunification talks over the ethnically divided island, urging regional rival Turkey to also engage in the effort.

The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, referred to global and regional issues, stressing Cyprus’ commitment to international law, peace and diplomacy.

The American Hellenic Institute (AHI) criticized Netflix's decision to restrict the international release of "Famagusta" to Greece and Cyprus due to Turkish government pressure.

Scheduled to premiere on September 20, the series covers the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus.

A Greek and Cypriot co-production dealing with Turkey's invasion of Cyprus in 1974 will not be broadcast outside Greece on Netflix following lobbying from Turkey, Turkey's TV watchdog has claimed.

The recent decision by Netflix to broadcast from September 20 the TV series "Famagusta" had caused intense reactions in Turkey.

Turkey continues its opposition to the screening of the series Famagusta on Netflix, firmly stating that it does not approve of such an action.

Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Guler addressed the Cyprus issue during a Monday meeting with senior military officials.

"We continue our efforts to ensure that the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus receives its due position on the international stage," Guler said, emphasizing that Turkey's support for a two-state solution will persist and grow.

Their presence, just 11 kilometers apart, highlights ongoing tensions despite attempts at rapprochement between Greece and Türkiye.

With the 50th anniversary of Turkey's bloody invasion of Cyprus coming up on July 20, Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Guler on Tuesday said his country is preparing to celebrate what he said was a "peace operation" on the divided Eastern Mediterranean island.
