Romanian female tennis player Simona Halep has been seeded 2nd at the last Grand Slam tournament of the year, US Open namely, to start on Monday in Flushing Meadows, New York, American Serena Williams, world's no. 1 being the main favourite of the competition. The previous two years' finalist Belarus Victoria Azarenla is seeded 16th.

LONDON - Serbia's Ana Ivanovic got off to a successful start at Wimbledon by beating Francesca Schiavone of Italy 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 in the tournament's first round late Tuesday.

The match lasted 92 minutes. Schiavone proved to be a difficult opponent, in particular in the first set, but Ivanovic claimed her sixth victory in as many matches against the Italian.
