Sofia's Air is Dangerous Again

The air in Sofia was dangerously polluted last night, according to official data from the municipality, BNR reported. Exceedance of the reference limits for the content of fine particulate matter in the air has been reported by all stations except the one in the Kopitoto mountain area and the non-working one in the Nadezhda neighborhood.

Pollutant-related deaths almost twice the EU average

The number of early deaths caused by air pollution in Greece is nearly double the European Union average, according to research.

Data from the European Environment Agency show that there were 16,440 early deaths in Greece in 2016 due to exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and ozone (O3). 

Low visibility delays flight to Thessaloniki airport

A flight from Athens to Thessaloniki was delayed by two hours on Thursday due to low visibility at the northern port city's international airport, state-run news agency ANA-MPA reported.

Greece's National Meteorological Service (EMY) said fog at the airport limits visibility to 100 meters creating problems for landing aircraft. It expects visibility to gradually improve after 10 a.m.

Due to the increased levels of fine particulate matter, parking spaces near metro stations will be free of charge throughout the day.

The European Commission Continues to Monitor the Air Quality in Bulgaria

The European Commission announced that it continues to monitor the air quality situation in Bulgaria and reminded that it has already taken decisive actions in the past. The EC initiated punitive proceedings against Bulgaria over the levels of fine particulate matter (PM10) and sulphur dioxide (SO2).

Drivers are advised to drive with caution and consistent speed on the Struma highway and the first-class I-1 road in the area of Kresna and Strumyani due to fog with a visibility of up to 5 meters, the Road Infrastructure Agency warned.
