Ten months after oil leak, Saronic Gulf beaches 'safe'
Ten months after the Agia Zoni II tanker sank in the Saronic Gulf, and following a widespread campaign to clean up tons of leaked fuel, local authorities say the sea and coastline have been depolluted.
Tram line suspended over weekend
The section of the Athens tram line between the Kallithea stop and the Peace and Friendship Stadium in Neo Faliro (known by its acronym SEF) will be suspended Saturday and Sunday as works get under way for the planned extension of the route to Piraeus.

Bishops urge resistance to new religion courses at school
Two Greek bishops are rallying parents not to allow their children to be taught the new religion course programs at state-run schools.
Pavlos, Bishop of Glyfada, Elliniko, Voula, Vouliagmeni and Vari, issued a circular on Wednesday urging parents in his congregation to demand that their children are taught the previous curriculum and not the new "unacceptable" material.

Saronic Gulf oil spill largely contained, says ministry
In a statement on Wednesday, the Shipping Ministry said that the marine pollution caused by an oil spill from a tanker that sank off the coast of Salamina last month has been largely contained.
According to the statement, issued after a session of the coordinating committee appointed to oversee the cleanup, there is no more "surface pollution" in the area of Salamina.

Clean-up crews are scrambling to contain an oil spill from a Greek tanker as it menaces some of Athens’ most popular beaches.
The vessel, Agia Zoni II, was carrying 2,500 tonnes of fuel when it sank off the island of Salamis on Sunday.
Nearby beaches were soiled by the oil, but officials believed it could be contained given mild wind conditions.
Health authorities warn against exposure at beaches affected by spill
Greece's Center for Disease Prevention and Control (KEELPNO) on Friday issued a public health warning, advising citizens and visitors to avoid exposure to areas affected by last weekend's oil spill in the Saronic Gulf.

Father arrested for forcing son and other children to beg
Officers of the Greek Police's Dias motorcycle unit said on Tuesday they had arrested a 34-year-old Romanian national on people trafficking charges and for exposing minors to danger, including his own son, by forcing them to beg.
According to reports, a minor was seen coming out of a van driven by the suspect before begging at a traffic light in Voula, southern Athens.
