Hazardous waste management plan gets green light

The Environment Ministry has approved the new national plan for the management of hazardous waste of industrial, medical and other materials.

Among its most salient provisions is that regarding the creation of a hazardous waste landfill in Tanagra, north of Athens, which has already been licensed but is facing opposition from the local community.

The salaries they deserve

Because of Greece's bankruptcy, the stereotype prevailed that all salaries in the public sector are a waste that serve clientelistic purposes. Thus, the salaries and status of civil servants ended up impermissibly low.

Over 100,000 waste bales to be relocated as health hazard cleanup begins in Pyrgos

Over 100,000 load-sized, densified bales of solid waste, which have been a health hazard for nearly a decade, are set to be relocated from the Potoki area of Pyrgos to the Triantafyllia landfill in Ilia, Peloponnese.

In addition to the waste bales, contaminated soil, polluted by urban solid waste, will also be transported to the landfill.

Trash-laden isles

The failure to properly manage waste is one of the Greek state's many enduring shortcomings.

The problem becomes urgent on the country's islands however, when the influx of tourists puts an even greater strain on areas that are very ecologically sensitive and often lack basic trash collection and management services.
