Women's European Water Polo Championship

Spain emerged as the new Olympic champion in women’s water polo, winning the gold medal undefeated in Paris. The “La Roja” secured the only title missing from their collection by defeating Australia 11-9 in the final, after having lost in two previous finals (both to the USA) in the last three Olympic events.

Though their return to Olympic-level competition after 16 years did not result in a medal, the players under coach Alexia Kammenou gained valuable experience after five losses and two wins.

After the game, both the coach and players were visibly emotional.

The largest European championship in the history of water polo began in Belgrade's Kombank Arena on Sunday.

It brings together 16 men's and 12 women's national teams who will compete in 100 matches.
