Samsung regained its position as the top smartphone seller, wresting back the lead from Apple as Chinese rivals close the gap on both market leaders, industry tracker International Data Corporation (IDC) has reported.

Samsung overtook Apple as worldwide smartphone shipments grew nearly 8 percent in the first quarter of this year to 289.4 million, IDC said.

In a recent report by Counterpoint Research, a leading global technology market research firm, it has been revealed that Apple's iPhone sales in China took a significant hit during the first six weeks of 2024. Cited by CNBC, the report indicates a staggering 24% decline in iPhone sales within this period.

Apple's iPhone for the first time became the world's biggest selling smartphone after rival Samsung's 12-year run as leader, data have showed.

According to data from the International Data Corporation (IDC) released on Jan. 16, the iPhone stole Samsung's crown in 2023 with 234.6 million units sold, compared to the South Korean firm's 226.6 million units.

Google has been fined more than $160 million by India's anti-trust watchdog after a probe found the tech behemoth was abusing its commanding position in the local smartphone market.

The company's Android mobile operating system is by far the dominant player in India and is run on 95 percent of all the country's smartphones.

Samsung Electronics is predicted to gain overwhelming advantage in the foldable phone market, which is expected to grow rapidly. It is a result that Samsung has continued to release foldable phones, lead-related technologies and pre-occupy the market shares.

Samsung Electronics reclaimed its crown as the world's biggest smartphone maker from Apple in the first quarter, cornering a fifth of overall global shipments.

China's Xiaomi rounded out the top three positions with its best quarterly performance ever as shipments surged 62% to 49 million phones.

Turkey is a crucial bridge in the region, as it links Europe, Africa, and the Mideast, said an official from Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi, citing its new multimillion-dollar factory in Istanbul.

Phones made in Chinese electronics giant Xiaomi's production unit in Turkey will be on the market starting next month, Turkey's industry and technology minister said on March 11.

Mustafa Varank made the remarks during a visit to the Xiaomi facility in Istanbul, where testing of smartphones is currently underway, according to a statement.

China's leading device maker Xiaomi is set to open a production facility in Istanbul with an investment of $30 million in the first quarter of this year.

Turkey will be the fourth country in the world where the brand is starting production, according to a statement from the company on Feb. 4.
