Beekeeping deputy mayor faces arson investigation in deadly Corinthia fire

The 70-year-old deputy mayor of Xylokastro-Evrostini, in the Peloponnese, the main suspect for arson in a deadly fire that occurred in late September, has been given 48 hours to testify. 

On Wednesday, a Corinth prosecutor ordered a preliminary investigation into the four-day fire that claimed two lives and burned 71 square kilometers of forest.

All schools in Xylokastro will remain closed tomorrow due to the fire

All schools of the Municipality of Xylokastro – Eurostini, in Corinthia, will remain closed tomorrow, Tuesday.

According to the municipality, the decision to not operate schools for the second consecutive day was taken due to the extraordinary conditions that have arisen from the fire, which broke out last Sunday in the area of Rozenon.

Speaking to the Athens News Agency, the mayor of Xylokastro-Evrostini, Vlasis Tsiotos, described the situation as “tragic,” with numerous active fire fronts and a large portion of the mountainous region already destroyed.
