Former Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra declared her innocence and asked for "kindness" from a court Aug. 1 during her final statement in a criminal negligence trial that could land her in prison for 10 years if she is convicted.

Thailand's ousted prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra insisted on her innocence May 19 at the start of a trial that could see her jailed for a decade, part of what observers say is a vendetta against her family.

Thailand’s army chief Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha announced on Thursday a military takeover of the government, reports The Washington Post. 

The announcement was made on national television and said that the commission, which imposed martial law on Tuesday will take control of the country's administration. 

Thailand's army has declared a state of martial law to "preserve law and order" amidst the ongoing political and social crisis in the country.

Thailand's Constitutional Court has ordered Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to step down over abuse of powers.
