European Union interior ministers on Thursday made a fresh attempt to overcome one of the bloc's most intractable political problems as they weighed new measures for sharing out responsibility for migrants entering Europe without authorization.

Greece's independent authority for transparency will investigate new reports that the authorities were involved in illegal pushbacks of refugees after the New York Times published a video allegedly showing the Coast Guard abandoning people at sea, many of which were children.

The European Commission has called on Greek authorities to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into fresh allegations of illegal migrant pushbacks, stated Ylva Johansson, the EU's Home Affairs Commissioner, on Monday.
