Hunyadi, Gagarin to be honoured with monuments in Belgrade

BELGRADE - Hungarian military commander Janos Hunyadi (c 1406 - 1456) and Russian astronaut Yuri Gagarin (1934 - 1968) will be honoured with monuments in Belgrade, the City Assembly decided on Thursday.

The monument to Hunyadi - known among Serbs as Sibinjanin Janko - will be erected at the Zemun Quay with funds to be secured by the Hungarian embassy in Belgrade.

Opposition New Party member and former Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Zivkovic told BIRN that prosecutors should launch an investigation into health minister Zlatibor Loncar over his alleged connections with the notorious Zemun Clan, whose members were found guilty of murdering Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic in 2003.

Minister says he could resign over photo taken with mobster

Health Minister Zlatibor Loncar says a photo of him and Dusan Spasojevic, made public recently, was made after he performed surgery on Spasojevic's father.

Loncar said that his resignation is "not contentious" - if the reason is the photograph. The minister also said he was never in the Zemun Clan villa.

Belgrade: Migrants protest in Belgrade, march towards Hungary

BELGRADE - A group of migrants protested this morning in the center of Belgrade, in a part near the main bus station. Migrants went to the streets and stopped all traffic after which they started walking towards New Belgrade and Zemun accompanied by the police, writes Serbian daily "Kurir".

Minister confirms he bought apartment from gangster's wife

Health Minister Zdravko Loncar has confirmed that he bought an apartment in Belgrade from the wife of a member of the Zemun Clan crime gang.

Beta agency reported on Tuesday that he said he "personally took all the contracts to the police, who did their part of the work, and the outcome is known."
