Domestic violence complaints soar during lockdown
Calls to the General Secretariat for Family Policy and Gender Equality's emergency hotline skyrocketed last month following the introduction of a public lockdown on March 23, which was aimed at curbing the spread of the coronavirus and is now being gradually eased.
The 15900 hotline received 1,760 calls reporting alleged acts of violence in April compared to 325 in March.

Queries on lockdown rules swamp police hotline
The Hellenic Police's (ELAS) 100 emergency hotline received a record number of calls from concerned citizens in March when the government announced a series of measures to limit the spread of the coronavirus in the country, official data seen by Kathimerini reveal.

Health crisis prompts digital strides in Greece
"The 13033 hotline was set up in just 15 hours," Digital Governance Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis told Kathimerini, describing his ministry's race last month to get everything in place over the space of just one weekend as the government announced restrictions on public movement that went into effect on Monday, March 23.

Trial run of EU emergency number's SMS system 'successful'
A test run of the SMS system linked to the 112 European Union emergency number was conducted successfully on Wednesday by the General Secretariat for Civil Protection, Digital Policy Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis said.
The trial run was focused on Syros with residents and visitors to the island receiving a text message as part of the test.
Emergency SMS system to be piloted on Syros
The General Secretariat for Civil Protection said Tuesday that ahead of the full activation by the end of the year of the 112 European Union emergency number in Greece, in the event of a natural disaster, mobile phones in the affected areas will receive text messages with helpful information.
