Temporary traffic restrictions on Vouliagmenis Avenue due to roadwork

Temporary traffic restrictions will be in place on Vouliagmenis Avenue, a key route from central Athens to the southern seaside suburbs, starting Saturday and continuing until November 22 due to ongoing roadwork.

The measures, which will affect traffic 24 hours a day, will be implemented in stages. 

Athens to get ‘smart’ traffic light system

The Athens Traffic Police said on Monday that a "smart" traffic light system equipped with surveillance cameras to monitor pedestrians and motorists will soon be piloted in the Greek capital.

The exact location where the system will be installed was not revealed. The results of the pilot program will be evaluated in order to expand the measure throughout Attica.

Recent arson attacks, violence may be linked to anarchist turf war

Police in Athens are investigating whether a spate of arson attacks on "establishment" targets and a fight involving members of a soccer fan club may be part of an effort by organized anarchist groups to establish new turf in other parts of the city center after being ousted from the downtown district of Exarchia.

Attacker of Athens Traffic Police chief turns himself in

A 22-year-old man who is accused of punching Athens Traffic Police chief Giorgos Diamantopoulos in the head in late August following a pro-migrant protest by anarchists in the city center, handed himself in to police in Drapetsona, a suburb of Piraeus, on Friday.

The suspect was granted conditional release and is to be summoned by an investigating magistrate in the coming days.

Bad start for school buses as multiple violations recorded

The Athens Traffic Police said on Monday it registered 60 safety and traffic violations by 316 school buses on the first day of the academic year.

Fines were handed to drivers for violations ranging from faulty tachographs, violating the speed limit, not wearing a seatbelt, worn-out tires and others.
