If the European Union is to survive it will have to concentrate all its energies to this end. This means that member-states will have to give up a larger part of their sovereignty to reinforce the whole. However, the global and regional earthquakes that demand ever closer union also strengthen forces which preach a return to a nonexistent idealized past of national greatness.

ICR London will organize, starting with Tuesday, a series of events on the occasion of the launch, in English, of the volume "Nostalgia" by Mircea Cartarescu, translated by Julian Semilian and published by the prestigious Penguin Classics.

Recently, this bittersweet personal desire to return to the past - nostalgia - has been powering the wheels of politics; many citizens have lost faith in the future and are angry with the present.

The number of people in Turkey who say they feel insecure and "nostalgic" about the past is increasing, according to a biannual survey carried out by the IPSOS research company titled "Guide to Understanding Turkey."

The nostalgia for socialist Yugoslavia in some Balkan countries indicates dissatisfaction with present-day conditions, a historian who led research on the issue told BIRN.
