Hopes that tensions between Athens and Ankara could be defused after the recent phone conversation between Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and his Turkish counterpart Binali Yildirim were dashed Monday after the latter again attempted to raise questions about Greek sovereignty over parts of the Aegean.

The Turkish coastguard has removed a Greek flag that had been raised on an islet in the Aegean Sea, off the coast of the Turkish resort town of Didim, Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said on Monday.

A Turkish military helicopter has landed in Alexandroupoli, northern Greece, the ANA-MPA news agency reported on Saturday, adding that its eight crew members are requesting political asylum.

Preliminary reports suggest the crew may belong to the faction of the Turkish armed forces that staged a coup on Friday night to topple Recep Tayyip Erdogan's government in Turkey.

Turkey's incoming Prime Minister Binali Yildirim has said he is preparing a list of cabinet ministers after President Recep Tayyip Erdogan asked him to form the country's new government.

"It is not the first time a government is formed in Turkey," Yildirim told reporters in Ankara on Monday, according to AFP.
