The failure to reunify Cyprus while in office has been one of Jean Claude Juncker's big regrets, the European Commission President told the Augsburger Allgemeine newspaper in an interview published on Friday.

Juncker, who spoke on Brexit and other issues, also found time to reveal his disappointment over the failure to reunify Cyprus.

German Ursula Von der Leyen was elected President of European Commission in Brussels.
On 1 November, Von der Leyen will be the first woman to take on the Commission presidency.
383 MEPs supported her, while 327 opposed her election. In order to be elected to the post, she needed 374 votes out of the present 747 Members of European Parliament.

At an extraordinary summit, European leaders could not agree on the distribution of top positions in the EU - President of the European Commission, the European Parliament, the European Council and the European Central Bank. Negotiations continue this morning.

Since the jailing of the former leader of the ruling Social Democrats, PSD, and de facto chief of government, Liviu Dragnea, for corruption on May 27, the government in Romania led by Viorica Dancila has been trying to rebrand itself and shed the damaging heritage that Dragnea left behind.

Bucharest, Jan 11 /Agerpres/ - European Commission President Jean Claude Juncker on Friday voiced his conviction that there are high chances that Romania holds a successful first Presidency at the EU Council, but he underscored at the same time that internal conflicts mustn't be exported to Europe.
