The conclusion of the tourism season, coupled with the loss of 133,300 jobs in the tourism and food service sectors, led to the second-worst October for the domestic labor market in 23 years, according to data from the Labor Ministry's "Ergani" database.

Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis commented on Thursday on the increase in declared overtime in the Ergani system after the implementation of the digital labor card, saying this had risen in the first seven months of 2024 compared with the previous year.

Overtime hours increased significantly in 2024, reaching 1.53 million in the first seven months, according to data from the ERGANI system. This rise is largely attributed to the introduction of the digital work card.

The digital labor card is evolving into a powerful weapon in the battle against undeclared overtime work, and consequently in favor of improving workers' incomes.

The Greek labor market registered a record in January-June with 339,208 new jobs, while the balance was also positive in the month of June, when hirings outnumbered layoffs for a fifth consecutive month, resulting in the creation of 23,961 new jobs.

The end of the 2023 tourism season came later than in previous years, and resulted in the loss of 82,463 jobs in November, of which 56,659 came from hotels and accommodation.

All workers in Attica, Patra, Halkida, Rethymno and other areas of the country under strict lockdown will need to have with them new documents proving their employment as of Monday, as the state intends to crack down on people going out for reasons other than work despite the measures against the pandemic.
