The Environment Ministry has approved a special urban planning scheme necessary for the relocation of Korydallos Prison - Greece's largest maximum-security penitentiary - in the Piraeus region to a new complex in Aspropyrgos, West Attica, covering 10.3 hectares.

Two correctional officers were arrested after a 22-year-old female inmate was found hanged on Friday evening at Korydallos Prison in western Athens, the Ministry of Citizen Protection announced on Tuesday.

A suspicious bag found right next to the home of the Korydallos Prison director in Dafni, central Athens, was declared harmless following an investigation by authorities.

According to Kathimerini, a resident of the same building spotted the bag and notified the police.

Law enforcement authorities conducted searches in the A Wing of the capital's Korydallos Prison, focusing on inmates from former Soviet countries and a Greek criminal charged with the murder of surveyor Panagiotis Stathis.

Guards at the Greek capital's Korydallos Prison managed to prevent an inmate from making a break for freedom on Wednesday.  

According to reports, guards spotted the inmate in the so-called dead zone after he apparently climbed the fence between the courtyard and the guarded perimeter.

A man has confessed to killing a fellow 35-year-old inmate from Albania during a riot in the west wing of the Korydallos prison on Wednesday afternoon.

An inmate was reportedly killed and another injured in a violent brawl involving knives or some other similar weapon in the Greek capital's Korydallos Prison on Wednesday.

According to initial reports, the inmate who was killed has been identified as a 35-year-old Albanian national. The injured man is said to be from Kosovo and was rushed to hospital with a stab wound on the back. 

A criminal lawyer accused of brutally beating his wife was led to Korydallos prison on Thursday, after an investigative magistrate ruled that he had breached his restraining orders.
