Greek appeal court upholds life sentence for US biologist’s killer
A mixed-jury appeals court in Crete on Thursday upheld the guilty verdict and life sentence of a 33-year-old man accused of murdering 60-year-old American biologist Suzanne Eaton in Maleme in 2019.
A local man, Ioannis Paraskakis, was sentenced to life in prison in 2020 over the killing, with an additional 13 years for rape and four months for the possession of firearms.
Bulgarian Parliament Rejects Proposal to Ease Referendum Conditions
The Bulgarian parliament has rejected a proposal to ease the conditions for holding referendums. The proposed changes, introduced by "There Is Such a People" (TISP), sought to adjust the Law on Direct Participation of Citizens in State Power and Local Self-Government to make it easier for referendums to be valid.

Athens court acquits defendants in murder trial of journalist Giorgos Karaivaz
An Athens mixed jury court on Wednesday acquitted the two defendants in the trial for the murder of journalist Giorgos Karaivaz, who was gunned down outside his home in April 2021. The court, which included both judges and a majority of jurors, found there was insufficient evidence to convict the two brothers, aged 49 and 41, of the crime.

Greeks have revised their view regarding technocratic governments, according to a Pew Institute poll of 24 nations for 2023, which found that support for expert cabinet members in Greece climbed by 25% in the last five years.
At the same time, citizens want more women, young people, and religious people in politics, as they have lost faith in the current political leadership.

Bulgarian Constitutional Court to Rule on Euro Referendum Rejection
After seven months of deliberation, the Constitutional Court is set to announce its decision on the rejection of a referendum proposal aimed at limiting the introduction of the euro before 2043.
Postal voting for European elections and referenda
Interior Minister Niki Kerameos and Deputy Minister Theodoris Livanios gave further details at a press conference on Thursday on the introduction of postal voting to the European elections.
The minister clarified that the postal voting bill does not currently concern the general elections, but only European elections and referenda.
