I recently saw an article by Fintan O'Toole, one of Ireland's most respected senior journalists. It was headed "Why is Ireland unable to solve basic problems? Why is it so dysfunctional?" He went on to discuss the failure of the modern Irish state to respond to social crises, its reliance on big success stories to cover up its mistakes, and its inadequate health service.

Ireland elects first gay Prime Minister
Leo Varadkar, the right-wing son of an immigrant Indian doctor, has been formally elected Ireland’s youngest and first gay Taoiseach.
Accepting his elevation to the most powerful office in the country, the 38-year-old said: “I’ve been elected to lead but I promise to serve.”

Bob Geldof blames young people for the Paris attacks (vid)
Boomtown Rats singer Bob Geldof says that the younger generation is to blame for the terror attacks sweeping the world and conflicts in the Middle East. Speaking at the One Young World conference in Bangkok, Thailand, the frontman accused young people of having blood on their hands.
