A volcanic eruption started on the Reykjanes peninsula in southwestern Iceland on Thursday, the third to hit the area since December, authorities said.

Live video images showed glowing lava oozing out of a fissure illuminating a plume of smoke rising up under the night sky.

The eruption was also recorded from a satellite, Maxar announced.
The intensity of the eruption has decreased since the dramatic scenes seen on Tuesday morning, although magma continues to seep from the volcano.
Iceland's Foreign Minister Bjarni Benediktsson said experts warned the eruption could last for months.

The eruption of a fissure near Mount Fagradalsfjall, which began late Friday, was the first in the same volcanic system in about 900 years.

Iceland raised its aviation alert over the nation's largest volcano to red on Aug. 29, after the Bardarbunga peak began erupting overnight.

A ban on air traffic around the country's largest volcanic system was also put in place, but the authorities said there were no signs of spewing ash.

A possible eruption of Iceland's biggest glacier, the Vattnajokull, is unlikely to prompt severe traffic disruptions, a EU source has explained.

Vattnajokull is also the country's second-highest peak.

The source, however, has added that air traffic might be disrupted as some EU member states might take the step.
